We started a journey in home education for pretty good reasons. The biggest reason was to give the young man more time to learn. He was being hurried through school and as the old African proverb sums up so succinctly "Hurry, hurry, has no blessings". We thought a lot about curriculums and subjects. We bought and discarded guidebooks and theories and methods. We worried about what he'd do when his secondary education was over. We knew that he most likely would not go to university, but with universities being the way they are in 2018, that's not an altogether bad thing. He thought he'd like to do a trade with landscaping being at the top of his list, but nothing came up despite may many attempts.
Then, in the middle of year 10, after months and months of trying he landed a job. It's a job that could have been made for him. Everything that he's good at is needed in the job, and after 18 months of hard work he's landed a traineeship with them. It's more than we could have ever asked for. They weren't interested in his education so much as his attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile and do the dirty jobs. They love that he turns up early for every shift, and won't leave until his job is finished. He starts at the top of the list for his shift and works through every task - no cherry-picking. He's polite to his managers, friendly with staff, and professional in every aspect. He's saved hard and bought a car. His traineeship will set him up for a strong future, either with his current employer, or another one.
One day they're sleeping in a cradle and the next they're driving in their own car to do night shift.
They grow up too soon.
